Grade 7:  H i s t o ry

Overview
Grade seven history covers the time in Canadian history after the explorers and before Confederation.  The main time periods are:
  • New France   Le Commerce de la Fourrure
  • Fight for North America
  • Loyalists and the American Revolution
  • War of 1812
  • The Great Migration
  • Rebellions of 1837
Themes and big ideas that we discuss throughout the year are:
  • Systems and Structures
  • Interactions and Interdependence
  • Environment
  • Change and Continuity
  • Culture
  • Power and Governance
We do not  focus solely on dates and battles and names.  We place the emphasis on the causes and the effects, on interesting individuals, on understanding why Canada is the way it is, based on it’s past.

Reporting
Grade seven students at Aldershot study History from January to June.  They receive evaluation for this subject on the second semester report card only.

Text Books
We use a variety of texts in the classroom.  I have found it more beneficial to have several copies of a variety of texts than to have a full class set of any one text.  This enables students to do reasearch more effectively and demonstrates the textbook is one source of information among many.   Here are some of the titles that we use:  Premières Communautés Canadiennes, Second Regard sur le Canada 7, Le Canada:  Un patrimoine à raconter, Rencontre Canada, Nos origines.  Students may sign these textbooks out at any time.

Accessing Resources
Most of the handouts that we use in class as well as presentations and other documents are available in Google Classroom.
